Private W. H. Grist 5th Mississippi Cavalry was killed in action in the battle of Harrisburg in 1864. He was buried in Tupelo in a cornfield off Lakeshore Drive and had lain there since. At the request of the landowner and his desire for a proper and honorable burial in a proper place this soldier's body has been exhumed and was reburied in the Old Verona Cemetery exactly 142 years to the day of his death. It is rare indeed that we are privileged to provide an honorable service in the reburial of a Confederate soldier. Those in uniform marched to the cemetery behind a horse-drawn caisson bearing the body of Private Grist in honor of this fallen soldier.About a 1000 people including 6 members of our camp attended. The flags in the pictures belong to Commander Ellis and the camp with members Larry McDaniel,Buddy Ellis,Tim Ellis and Bingham Wade put up the flags. Also attending were Stan Hughes and Arthur C. Dalton Jr.
